Storage Basics

Updated 2026-07-09

Cigar storage is any sealed container that holds cigars at a steady relative humidity... a wooden humidor is the traditional answer, not the only one.

The definitions

Humidor. A box built to hold a stable RH, traditionally lined with Spanish cedar. The wood buffers moisture... absorbing when the air runs wet, releasing when it runs dry... and it's where the classic "cedar" association in tasting notes comes from.

Seasoning. Raw cedar arrives dry, and dry wood pulls moisture out of everything sharing the box. Seasoning means letting the wood itself take on moisture until it's equilibrated. Until that happens, the box quietly steals from the cigars.

Two-way humidity packs. Sealed pouches (Boveda is the common brand) holding a salt solution that both releases and absorbs moisture to hold the RH printed on the pack. Two-way is the point... they correct in both directions. Spent packs go rigid.

Beads and gel. Humidification media that buffer around a set point and get recharged with distilled water. Same job as the packs in refillable form.

Tupperdor. An airtight food container plus a two-way pack. No wood to season, and the seal is the whole trick... airtight plastic holds a band with very little drift. It counts as real storage, not a stopgap.

Hygrometer. The gauge that reads RH. Digital ones drift, which is why people check them against a known reference now and then.

Storage is also where aging happens... resting finished cigars so flavors mellow and marry. Same box, longer clock.

The common mistake

Loading cigars into an unseasoned wooden humidor. The dry cedar drinks first, the RH sags no matter how many packs go in, and the first month of ownership turns into a mystery hunt. A close second: trusting the factory hygrometer glued into the lid without ever checking it.

And if storage runs wet for weeks, the evidence shows up on the cigars themselves... fuzzy patches covered under reading the wrapper, in the plume-versus-mold section.
