Drink whatever you like... including water, which is what nearly every review on this site was smoked with. A drink changes a cigar less than the pairing charts claim, and the cigar you actually want to smoke matters far more than what's in the glass.
Where this site actually stands
Personally, I don't really pair... and that position sets up every drink page that follows. When I want a drink, I want a drink; when I want a cigar, I want a cigar. What I'm chasing in a cigar is the cigar's own flavor... that's the whole hobby for me... and I'm not going to write pairing gospel from experience I don't have. Nearly every review on this site says the same thing in its Setup line: the drink was water. On purpose. Water keeps the palate clean, so the notes describe the cigar and not the beverage program.
So this page and the ones under it stick to what I can defend: what a drink actually does next to a cigar, mechanically, so you can steer... not a matrix telling you which Scotch is "correct" with a maduro. Nobody's palate works off a chart, and the pairing world runs thick with borrowed certainty.
What a drink actually changes
A few real mechanisms, and they're all you need:
Anything with sugar or fat coats your palate. Sweet drinks, creamy drinks, dessert-adjacent drinks lay down a film that smooths a cigar's rough edges and mutes its detail... which is a feature with a harsh cigar and a bug with a subtle one. It's the same reason tasting works best on a clean mouth.
Alcohol amplifies heat. Spirits and a full-flavored cigar both bring burn. Stack them and the combined pepper can shout over the flavors you paid for. This is most of why people add water or ice to whiskey alongside a cigar... it's turning down the noise, not committing a crime.
Carbonation scrubs. Sparkling water and fizzy drinks strip the film off your palate between puffs, which resets your taste and can make each draw read brighter. Plain water does a gentler version of the same job.
Intensity matching is the one old rule with something in it. A delicate drink disappears next to a heavy cigar, and a huge drink flattens a mild one. Commonly advised, broadly true, and it's a guideline about not wasting things you like, not a law. Break it whenever you're curious.
The case for water, made without apology
Water is not the absence of a pairing... it's the choice that lets the cigar do all the talking. If you're still learning what cigars taste like, or building a palate, or actually trying to evaluate a stick, water wins. It also keeps you hydrated across a two-hour smoke, which your stomach will thank you for... a cigar on an empty stomach with nothing but bourbon alongside is the classic recipe covered in nicotine and not getting sick.
Somewhere along the way "just water" started sounding like a beginner move. Backwards. It's the reviewer's move. Every cigar on this site earned its verdict without a drink dressing it up.
If you do pair, here's the whole method
Pick a cigar you know you like. Pick a drink you know you like. Notice what happens. If the combination beats the parts, write it down and do it again; if it fights, don't. Your own two data points outrank any pairing chart ever printed, because the chart wasn't written for your palate. That's not a cop-out... it's the same reason this site reviews cigars one palate at a time instead of averaging the internet.
The drink pages that follow... bourbon, coffee, beer, the rest... each cover what that beverage mechanically does next to a cigar and where the folklore overpromises. None will tell you what you're supposed to like. That part was never anybody's call but yours.
